Port is a fortified Portuguese wine (typically 19-22% ABV) made from grape varieties of the Douro Valley, with fermentation stopped mid-process by adding grape spirit, leaving residual natural sugars. A standard 50ml measure contains around 1 unit and 75-90 kcal. It provides small amounts of polyphenols from the grape skin contact during fermentation. Ruby and vintage ports have more polyphenols than tawny.
A 50ml port is a standard measure equivalent to one unit; as a dessert wine the small serving size naturally limits intake. Ruby port has more antioxidant polyphenols than tawny, which is oxidised during ageing.
