Berberine — 500 mg

💊 What it does

Berberine is an alkaloid compound found in several plants including barberry, goldenseal, and tree turmeric. It has a remarkable range of biological effects, most notably activation of AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase) — the same pathway activated by metformin and exercise. Clinical evidence supports significant blood glucose lowering effects comparable to metformin in some trials, as well as lipid-lowering (reducing LDL cholesterol and triglycerides), anti-inflammatory effects, and gut microbiome modulation. It is one of the most pharmacologically active plant-derived compounds in common supplemental use.

👤 Who needs it

People with type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes seeking natural blood sugar management alongside lifestyle measures. Those with elevated LDL cholesterol or triglycerides. People with PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) — evidence for insulin sensitisation and hormonal regulation. Those with metabolic syndrome. Note: berberine's potent glucose-lowering effect means it should be used with medical supervision if on any diabetes medication.

🥦 Food sources first

Berberine is not found in meaningful amounts in common foods. It is found in the bark and roots of barberry, goldenseal, Oregon grape, and tree turmeric — plants not typically eaten as food.

🗓 When to supplement

When blood sugar regulation is a primary concern and lifestyle measures are being actively pursued. For lipid management as an adjunct to diet. For PCOS management. Always under medical supervision if on any blood glucose or lipid-lowering medication.

🏷 Best form to look for

Berberine HCl is the standard form. Dihydroberberine (DHB) is a more bioavailable form that causes fewer GI side effects and may be more effective per mg. Sustained-release berberine products reduce GI discomfort.

⏰ When to take it

With meals — berberine is most effective when taken before or with carbohydrate-containing meals to blunt post-meal glucose spikes. Three times daily dosing (500 mg each) maintains more consistent effects than once daily.

⚡ Interactions & combinations
Significant drug interactions: berberine inhibits CYP3A4, CYP2D6, and P-glycoprotein — potentially raising blood levels of many medications. Do not combine with metformin without GP supervision (additive glucose-lowering can cause hypoglycaemia). Avoid with cyclosporine, digoxin, and some antibiotics. Do not use in pregnancy (stimulates uterine contractions). Avoid during breastfeeding.
🛡 Safety notes
Generally well tolerated at 500 mg three times daily. Most common side effect is GI upset (nausea, constipation, or diarrhoea) — this is reduced by taking with meals and using sustained-release formulations. The drug interaction profile is significant — always inform your GP.
🌿 Vegan note
