Retail currant buns are enriched yeasted bread rolls made with flour, butter, sugar, eggs, and dried currants. They provide carbohydrate energy, modest protein, and small amounts of iron and B vitamins from the flour and dried fruit. Their sugar content is moderate compared to confectionery. A typical bun weighs 65–80g and provides around 200–240 kcal.
Lightly toasting a currant bun and spreading with a small amount of butter is a traditional way to serve them. Choose wholemeal versions where available for added fibre.
