Routes of exposure

Health concerns

Phthalates — particularly DEHP, DBP, and BBP — are reproductive toxicants that disrupt androgenic hormone signalling, reducing testosterone in males and causing developmental reproductive effects. The physical conditions of yoga and intense exercise (warm, dilated pores, perspiring skin) create higher phthalate dermal absorption than the same skin contact at rest. A 2012 study found that yoga practitioners using PVC mats had measurably higher urinary phthalate metabolites than non-practitioners. DEHP, DBP, and BBP are restricted to 0.1% in articles intended for skin contact under EU REACH restrictions. This applies to yoga mats sold in the EU. However, compliance monitoring is inconsistent and non-EU manufactured products sold through online marketplaces may not comply. PVC yoga mats carry no mandatory labelling requirements regarding plasticiser content. The UK retained REACH restrictions on phthalates in skin-contact articles post-Brexit.

How to reduce your exposure

Choose yoga mats made from natural rubber, cork, jute, or certified phthalate-free TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) — these are widely available and perform comparably to PVC. Check whether your gym's floor tiles and mats carry REACH compliance information. Wash hands after handling gym equipment before eating. After purchasing a new PVC mat (if unavoidable), air it outdoors for 24–48 hours before use to reduce surface phthalate levels. For hot yoga, the elevated temperature makes material choice even more important.
