Soft wheat tortillas are flatbreads made from refined wheat flour, fat (lard or vegetable shortening), salt, and water, popular as wraps, burritos, and quesadillas. They provide carbohydrate, modest protein, and modest fat, with a soft, pliable texture. A standard 25cm tortilla (~55–65g) provides around 160–200 kcal. Whole wheat varieties offer more fibre than standard refined flour versions.
Warm tortillas briefly in a dry frying pan or directly over a gas flame for 20–30 seconds per side — this makes them more pliable, less likely to crack when rolled, and significantly improves their flavour. Keep warm in a folded tea towel while preparing fillings.
